Have you ever moved to a country that is both familiar and foreign? I am Romanian by heritage, but I was born in New York and often bopped around from country to country, never actually living in Romania. As a child, my visits were few and far between, usually for the Christmas holidays or to see my grandparents on weekends. But as I grew older, my curiosity about Romania deepened. I wanted to build a stronger relationship with it. I wanted to learn the local idioms and colloquial expressions. I wanted to explore its geography — villages, cities, and nature. All of this in the hope of creating a clearer sense of personal identity. So, I took the plunge and decided to spend more time here.

I was eager to explore. I wanted to know where to go and what to do. Where could I go hiking near Bucharest? Where could I eat good ramen? And why have so many coffee shops popped up all of a sudden? And as we all do in today’s digital age, I went online. Struggling to effortlessly read in Romanian, I turned to English content. However, as my research progressed, I noticed that most online, well-written English content about the country only scratched the surface and catered to typical tourist interests. I didn’t want to read (again) about Bran’s castle – aka Dracula’s castle. While there is so much quality content about Romania in Romanian, there is less in English.

Frustrated, I saw an opportunity. Combining my love for travel and storytelling into a passion project, I launched LA NOI. It is an online travel magazine about the country that offers tips and fresh perspectives. I collaborate with Romanian freelancers — talented writers, photographers, and illustrators with a deep understanding of various Romanian subjects. And I am captivated by what I keep learning. Romania is a country with a rich history, infused with contradictions. It is multilayered – filled with complexities. It is also poetic, quirky, and fascinating.

I hope LA NOI becomes your introduction to Romania and inspires you to travel through it. I’d like to thank those who believe in this project and who support it with their time and energy. It’s a privilege to work alongside amazing people.
